HGV class 2 driver jobs in West Sussex

Rigid lorry work turns up in two industries at once. West Sussex holds 1,750 employee jobs in freight transport by road and 3,000 in warehousing and storage.

The balance between those two counts says more about class 2 work in West Sussex than either number on its own. Warehousing outweighs road freight here, which usually means more distribution running out of large sites.

Of the freight transport by road employee jobs the 2024 survey splits by hours in West Sussex, 450 are part time, 26.5% of the split. The middle across the South East is 23.1%, so West Sussex sits above it, 6th of 19 areas on this measure. A part-time share around this level usually means relief and weekend rounds counted alongside the permanent drivers.

Two further counts round out the West Sussex picture: 1,950 employee jobs in postal and courier activities, and 0.5% postal and courier activities, share of all employee jobs.

Measured on employee jobs in warehousing and storage, West Sussex ranks 6th of the 19 areas in the South East. The middle across the South East is 1,000, against 3,000 in West Sussex. Across the 153 areas in England the middle is 1,250. Next to West Sussex in that order sit Surrey at 3,500 and Reading at 2,250.

On the separate business register count of freight transport by road workplaces employing 10 or more, West Sussex ranks 3rd of the 19 areas in the South East. The middle across the South East is 10, against 40 in West Sussex. Across the 153 areas in England the middle is 15. Next to West Sussex in that order sit Hampshire at 70 and Surrey at 35.
